  17. It seems to me that the Web in its current state is missing out on ideas
  18. from reseach into hypertext systems. Currently there is only a simple link
  19. mechanism taking you to other documents, and a crude keyword search mechanism.
  20. I would like to suggest some extensions which would greatly enrich the
  21. capabilities of the web:

  23. Pictures
  24. ========

  26. We want to have documents with pictures in them, that appear and are
  27. formatted as part of the document. A reasonable way of doing this would
  28. be to include references in html documents to objects which should be
  29. displayed as part of the document, but which aren't part of html itself.
  30. It seems sensible to support a variety of formats: TIFF, GIFF, DIBs
  31. Fax group III/IV, CGM etc. The idea of embedded objects which return their
  32. size and can display themselves at a given location seems appropriate.

  34. The client doesn't know in advance about these embedded objects, it therefore
  35. makes sense for the server to be able to append them to the requested html
  36. document so as to avoid a further network loop delay for retrieving them.
  37. If you are interested, we can discuss ideas for how to modify the http
  38. protocol to support this.

  40. The Book Metaphor

  43. Books are very familiar to all of us, and come with a conceptual apparatus
  44. including:

  46.     o   title
  47.     o   author
  48.     o   publication date
  49.     o   copyright
  50.     o   contents
  51.     o   chapters
  52.     o   sections
  53.     o   pages
  54.     o   index
  55.     o   glossary
  56.  
  57. It would be great to extend html to support these. My suggestion is to have
  58. special documents which group these elements together. These documents are in
  59. sgml and include the above information, either directly or by reference.
  60.  
  61. The browser recognises the type of these documents and uses them to provide a
  62. browsing context. Thus you can show a button bar with buttons for showing the
  63. contents, the index, the glossary and <<, >> controls for moving sequentially
  64. between pages or chapters. I have lots of ideas for handling glossaries and
  65. indexes and will elaborate in a subsequent note.

  67. While it is possible to add special references from documents to the index,
  68. and next/previous document, it is preferable to hold these separately. You can
  69. then use the same document without modifications in a whole variety of books,
  70. magazines etc. This approach is much richer than simple lists of chapters.

  72. To implement this we only need to agree on the sgml dtd and document type!
